Tynwald Day 2008

I'm sure we are all looking forward to celebrating our next Tynwald Day on the 5th July.
Much planning has gone into this QMS meeting.
The President and Committee, on behalf of our members, would like to acknowledge the help and generosity of Mr Jim Sheppard, Passenger Manager for the I.O.M Steam Packet Company, Mr Adrian Earnshaw MHK, Minister for Tourism, Isle of Man Government, and Rachele Quayle from the Office of Tourism and Leisure.

St Patrick's Dinner, 14th March

President Val represented the Queensland Manx Society with husband Tony.

Helidon Celtic Festival

President Val met up with the Lockyer Valley Pipe Band at the Helidon Celtic Festival on Sunday 7th October.
Helidon is about an hour west of Brisbane just off the Toowoomba road. This small picturesque country town hosted this new festival of Celtic musical entertainment, stalls and other items of interest.

The Lockyer Valley Pipe Band, led by Pipe Major Ken McMillan and wearing a special Manx tartan, joined other bands in a mass march down the main street at the festival.

Pride of Australia Awards

    George Genn

Our own George Genn was recently runner up in the Mateship category in this year's Pride of Australia awards. He was one of the many unsung heroes from throughout Queensland who were nominated for this year's Pride of Australia awards. The winners of the 10 categories and the finalists received their awards at a special function to honour their achievements.

George enlisted in the army before WW II and in 1942 joined the 55th Australian Field Park Company, Royal Australian Engineers, which served in New Guinea. George was discharged in 1946 and suggested that they all meet every year for a reunion. For the past sixty years, George has been Chairman/President of the association and has organised the annual get-together, which now includes wives and widows, to keep their special bond of friendship alive.
