The Manxman

The Manxman, a novel written by famous Manx author, Sir Hall Caine, sold over half a million copies and was made into a film by the London Film Company in 1916 and again by Alfred Hitchcock in 1929.

The Manxman, considered by many to be Hall Caine's magnum opus, runs to 126 chapters and provides many hours of reading.

For those who drive or walk a lot, or simply don't have time to read a great work of literature, Tony Ashworth has recorded the Manxman as an audiobook and made it available on the internet for your entertainment.

The story, set in the Isle of Man in the 19th Century, is a romantic love triangle which tells the story of boyhood friends Philip Christian, a lawyer, and Pete Quilliam, a poor fisherman.  When Old Caesar, the father of Kate Cregeen, refuses to consent to his daughter's marriage to Pete, Pete decides to sail to Kimberley in South Africa to seek his fortune, leaving Philip to look after Kate during his absence. There are many vignettes of life as it was in 19th Century Isle of Man, vividly told by a great Manx man of letters.
